Greetings

The past few months have been busy in the area of health and social development. We have interviewed and hired new staff that I believe would benefit the community and the Centre. The positions that have changed are the CHN/HCN, Janitor, Receptionist/ Medical Transportation Coordinator, Daycare/ Head Start Coordinator and we will be hiring a new Home Care Aide Worker.

Our vision as Leaders continues to focus on “social infrastructure”. This is demonstrated by the approval of our Chief and Council to deliver the social development program based on community input. “Social infrastructure” is not a program, but a concept that is being incorporated into all areas of health and social development programming. By giving you, the members more input in decision-making in various program areas our community can be strengthened. Individual and community needs have been our focus. Just as our community has infrastructure such as roads, water, sewer, power, our community has its own infrastructure. You couldn’t get around our community very well without roads and you can’t get through life as easy without a road or path to follow. This is what social infrastructure will do for our community. The benefits of this concept will continue well into the future. When our community has input into solving its own problems, everyone wins. When individuals come together for a common goal, everyone in our community is better off. We hope this initiative serves to be a model for all band programming and community issues in the future. Our community still faces many social problems and issues bur we are committed to working together to solve these problems.

A planning meeting was held with Chief and Council. The purpose of that meeting was to plan, set goals and priorities, encourage teamwork, and review community wants and needs. Many good discussions were held and those present made a commitment too work together better and share information. One of the results of the workshop was a listing of priorities for all departments. In the area of Health and Social Development the following priorities were identified:

1. Communication: that more information is required re: meetings and events, commitment from councilors is needed and information boards are needed at all band offices and schools. Info should be provided along with S/A checks.
2. Trust: more community activities, sharing circles, and time management is needed, as is less gossip and team building skills. People also need to be empowered.
3. Workshops: Workshops should be available for different ages and contests should be held for youth involvement. More workshops are based in the community so the people can benefit from them.

Both the Health Committee and myself will strive to meet these goals and focus on these priority areas.
